When Beachgoers Fled Violence, Viral Photo Depicts Rescuer Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, views the iconic coast as her back yard. On a recent weekend evening, she, similar to other local residents, detected cracking sounds echoing across the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was too light and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. She left her home, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks on display signaled a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the avenue, conversing with a pair who had rushed up the hill soaked, she noticed someone approaching behind her. This turned out to be a beach patrol officer, dashing in the direction of Bondi barefoot from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. It was just him moving in the direction that all the others was trying to flee, and hauling that sizeable pack and without footwear … He moved at something that surely every part of you would instruct you to move in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just totally pedal to the metal racing.”

A Symbol of Bravery Amidst Chaos

The image that Ching snapped of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as among numerous instances of courage in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, officers and medical teams attending to dozens of those hurt.

Council Praise

Waverley council, the local authority that employs many full-time lifeguards, said that the team rose to the occasion from the second the violence commenced right into late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many powerful stories, but the popular photo of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is remarkable,” commented a mayor.

“Our lifeguards show altruism every day in keeping our internationally renowned coastlines protected for visitors, but what we saw on that day should be highly praised.

“During this time of sorrow and come to terms with the terror of this heinous tragedy, I think it is vital that we consider just how much light we have witnessed in the face of such evil.”
