We are analyzing images and video circulated this morning that purport to show the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the location of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
