The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second one put out by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will love its inclusion.
But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
