Extremely High Pollution Measurements

Multiple areas of the capital recorded an air quality index above 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the recommended level established by the WHO.

Particular areas, readings of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times above acceptable standards.

Pyrotechnics Ban and Current Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, authorities had enforced a total prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the deadly pollution that covers the city as winter sets in.

Around the festival period, the concentration of hazardous particles in the air has been found to spike to 70% higher the peak records ever documented in China's capital, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated city.

Multiple Contamination Factors

The situation in the city is caused by a mix of multiple factors including transportation pollution, dust, development work, waste incineration and pollutants from crop residue ignition in nearby regions of farming communities.

In these regions, agricultural workers regularly ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, creating hazardous smog that then gets trapped over the city as cooler air sets in.

The economic and health consequences on the roughly thirty-three million people living in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to various research.

This pollution causes elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can even lead to malignancies.
