Space Traveler Reveals Depression After Wave of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Months following reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the followers whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that amid the criticism, considerable good had emerged from the experience, including elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
