Ahead of marking his half-decade plus one year at the helm, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his longevity in North London is fundamentally dependent to winning major honors.

The Journey So Far: Six Years in Charge

The former Arsenal captain assumed control on 20 December 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup triumph not long after. But, that early success remains his only major honor after taking over from Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” the manager said in response to a query about staying beyond 2027. “But it’s about today. And a lot of things have to happen in the next few months as well to earn the right.”

Saturday night brings the anniversary with a fixture against Everton, the identical team Arsenal played just after his appointment was announced.

Present Challenges

Given that chasing Manchester City set to face West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal could be displaced top spot in the Premier League before their own match begins. This potential shift even with Arteta presiding over a squad that has been plagued by more than a century of fitness issues over the course of last season.

Arteta currently has a year and a half left on the deal he signed in 2024, but is acutely aware that success is required in the immediate future.

Earning the Right

Arteta elaborated, stressing the constant necessity to validate his position. “In my view a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you communicate, how you step into the dressing room, the signal you send.”

He added, praising the strong backing from the hierarchy, while singling out the team's buy-in as paramount. “At the end, the critical component are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, desire to learn and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Injury Concerns

The team approaches the upcoming game coping with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a hamstring injury that is anticipated to see him miss action for the coming weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Despite the injury crisis and the immense scrutiny, Arteta is confident the club's “objectives and communication” are profoundly distinct from when he initially took over.

The manager referenced the team's performances as a sign they are nearing their goal. “You look at the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the caliber we've reached.”

Arteta concluded, “This is a standard that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And we want to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
