Instructor Fatally Shot and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at Nigerian School
Armed assailants have taken the life of an instructor and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a female high school in north-western Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The armed faction breached the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Maga, Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.
The assailants "confronted officers on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their living quarters, authorities disclosed.
One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now being treated medically.
Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.
Local residents informed journalists that the armed men then led a contingent of young women into nearby bushland.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "extra specialized police forces, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.
