Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 were wounded when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the death toll is 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.
Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the individuals who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments before the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
