Democrats Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution
Democratic officials voiced anger after Donald Trump alleged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be taken into custody and punished "through capital punishment" following their release of a controversial video.
The Content That Sparked the Controversy
The video footage, shared on earlier this week, includes six Democratic lawmakers who previously worked in military or intelligence roles.
"As we did, you all took an oath to protect and support this constitution," the representatives stated in the 90-second video. "And right now, the threats to our governing document aren't just from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our laws are explicit, you can decline unlawful commands, you can refuse unlawful commands, you have to reject unlawful commands. No one has to carry out commands that contravene the statutes or our national charter."
Trump's Angry Reply
The video message seemed to provoke a furious reaction from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he wrote: "This is really bad, and Risky to our Country. Their words cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Officials React
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Democratic leadership released a combined announcement condemning the remarks.
"Political violence has no place in the United States," they declared. "Elected officials who participated in the video all served our United States with exceptional national pride and excellence. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's offensive and harmful death threats against congressional representatives, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to make certain the safety of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged social media posts and recant his aggressive rhetoric before he causes harm," the declaration added.
Representatives' Firm Answer
The representatives who appeared in the video also released a declaration.
"We identify as veterans and national security professionals who care for this country and made an oath to defend and uphold the founding document of the United States," they said. "This commitment continues forever, and we aim to honor it. No intimidation, intimidation, or incitement will stop us from that sacred responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president considers it liable to punishment by execution for us to repeat the law," they continued. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their protection as they execute their pledge to the national charter and duty to obey only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They stated: "All citizens must unite and censure the former president's calls for our death and partisan aggression. This is a time for principled stance."
Additional Political Reactions
The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's comments and published on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is demanding the capital punishment of government members."
He added: "This represents an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this right away and without qualification."
The Conservative official supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", labeling the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This represents very dangerous, you have important representatives of the government advising troops to defy commands, I think that represents historic in the nation's past."
The GOP official also reportedly stated to media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the crime of sedition" but that "attorneys have to parse the wording and establish all that."
White House Response
During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a reporter, "Does the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson answered: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the president is responding to," the representative declared. "You have current representatives of the federal government who conspired to arrange a digital communication to personnel of the national defense, to current military personnel advising them to defy the executive's proper directives."
She said: "The integrity of our defense system rests on the hierarchy, and if that system is compromised, it can result in casualties, it can cause confusion, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are basically encouraging."
