Election Demonstration in Cameroon
Numerous in Cameroon are furious over the fact that the president has won an eighth consecutive term

Cameroon's Interior Minister the interior minister has announced that political opponent Issa Tchiroma Bakary will be prosecuted over claims that he instigated "aggressive post-election demonstrations".

A minimum of 4 protesters have been fatally wounded during clashes between police and military and demonstrators since Cameroon's election on October 12, with President Paul Biya, aged 92 securing an eighth presidential mandate.

The opposition leader maintains that he won the election, a claim rejected by the governing party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Violent crackdowns by police and security officers on protesters have alarmed the international community, with the UN, African Union and European Union demanding caution.

Official's Claims

Earlier this week, the interior minister charged the opposition figure of planning what he referred to as "illegal" protests resulting in the loss of lives, and also rebuked him for declaring victory in the electoral contest.

He added that the opposition leader's "associates responsible for an rebellious scheme" will also undergo judicial processes.

Poll Figures

The president, who came to power in 1982 and is now the oldest serving president, won the October 12 election with a majority of the vote, compared to 35.2% for the challenger, according to the constitutional court.

Challenger's Position

The opposition figure is yet to respond to the official announcement to try him, but he had before declared that he rejected a fraudulent outcome - and that he was fearless of being taken into custody.

Following the vote count, he reported that security forces shot on demonstrators gathered near his home in the city of Garoua, causing the death of at least two individuals.

Inquiry Revealed

On Tuesday, the interior minister announced that an probe would be launched into unrest before and after the declaration of the vote outcome.

"Throughout the violence, some of the perpetrators lost their lives," he commented, without offering a exact count of demonstrators who have been fatally injured in the incidents.

Nji further mentioned that several officers of the security forces also sustained serious injuries.

Present Conditions

While the interior minister insisted the condition throughout Cameroon was now under control, protesters remain active in certain regions of the nation, especially in urban centers, where protesters mounted obstructions on Tuesday, and burnt tires on the streets.

Analysts warn that the political turmoil could lead the nation into a governmental instability.
